My take on SOPA and why in India it is unnecessary

1.We do not have streaming services like Hulu and Netflix to avail the benefits of streaming online media.

2.We are not blessed with high speed broadband internet,in which case the above point becomes void.

3.It's not that we do not go to theaters to watch new movies and are willing to pay high prices for tickets as well if they are good movies.

4.Not every movie sees the light of release in theaters in India or releases on time. For that we have few options other than relying on the internet to get the relevant media.Sometimes because of the content, the movies might even escape the release in shops in India.

5.We would be hard put to purchase titles from Amazon etc in terms of US Dollars since 1 USD=Rs 50 at current exchange rate nearly. So 5$ and 10$ price tags even though tempting in US would actually be expensive if realized to rupees.

6.Quality matters to most of us and if we have to purchase Blu Rays then we would have to add the expense of a Blu Ray player as well.

7.Its not feasible to purchase TV episodes of each and every show that we follow considering the prices at which they are offered, and since we do not have Hulu and high bandwidth, using the internet remains the only option for us.We cannot wait till they are shown in our television channels and most of the time even if they are aired, they would be censored as in the case of most movies that are on air on TV channels. Moreover bulk of advertisments kill the pleasure of watching a movie or a TV show actually on the television.

8.Of late, there has been a trend to release media on the internet first free of cost before they are made widely available to the public. This has also resulted in a boost in their sales and also unknown talented people have managed to come into the foray because of the internet. So downloading is not always evil.

9.Its not possible to track each and every IP address, that would be like snooping on people's privacy and hacking which is not ethical without consent or if it is for other purposes. If you take out direct download sites or torrents there would be alternatives already available and something which is mutual sharing like P2P and ED2k networks cannot be stopped.

10.Lastly,if a movie is bad it will tonk at the box office or get panned harshly. If a movie is good,it doesn't matter how people view it if in the eventuality the film is praised and well received.Viewership is very important and especially in case of Indie films which people do not watch normally,it helps in promoting the film and its crew as well.

PS- Please make sure that you know how to use magnet links, because in future torrent links might be disabled.
Here is a good article on how to use magnet links which is pretty simple as it eliminates the need of a torrent file to start downloading-

Megaupload is dead, but here are few alternatives to direct download and no one can stop or kill everything :)

Very well written, the points demonstrate the truth quite clearly :)

Thanks :D,no matter how hard some might try, people would still find ways to download because net has advanced so much and there is no dearth in options.P2P sharing is mutually sharing and one cannot eliminate that totally.Maybe in fiction it might be remotely possible but in real life, you cannot spy and keep a track on billions of people ;).
Even folks in US who have more benefits than us are opposing SOPA etc which speaks a lot about protecting your freedom :)

Thoughtful points :). And all of them are true. Its sad that the censorship here kills the joy of watching a movie on TV ( also the irritating advertisements).. internet is always the best alternative, even if the speed here sucks big time.
